Green Dragon Temple Turns 40: Alumni Picnic Celebration

Sunday August 12, noon – 4 p.m.
Green Gulch Farm

Amidst all the wonderful events in honor of Zen Center’s 50th, it’s easy to overlook that there’s another birthday in the family: Green Gulch Farm is celebrating its 40th year as a Zen temple. The occasion is a perfect time for SFZC alumni (need not have lived in Cloud Hall or its surrounds!) to come together and share an afternoon of company and memories in this wonderful practice place. So bring your picnic fixins and we’ll bring the tea and cake.

The Sunday program, which many alumni may wish to attend before the picnic gets underway, will follow its usual schedule. Please join us on the lawn at noon for lunch and festivities. We hope many of the former farm apprentices who have done so much to cultivate the land and keep us in glorious produce over the years will be able to come as well.

GGF Alumni Picnic Schedule

Noon-1:30 p.m. BYO Picnic on the Lawn
We’re allowing time for those who would like to attend the full Q&A with Reb to grab some lunch before we continue the rest of our program. Non-Q&A picnickers can enjoy a leisurely lunch on the lawn and/or take a stroll down to the farm or beach before we convene in the garden.

1:30 p.m. Herb Circle— Ceremonial Planting and Storytelling
Following words of welcome by Linda Ruth Cutts, Wendy Johnson and garden manager Lauren Bouyea will lead us in offering incense and a planting to mark the occasion of Green Gulch’s 40th. Wendy will share some history of the garden and we welcome everyone to tell stories of their time at Green Gulch.

2:30 p.m. Tea and Cake Served in the Herb Circle
If the afternoon becomes very foggy and windy, we’ll move this inside. But hot tea will help warm the occasion, and as anyone who knows Green Gulch knows— bring layers!

Reminder: please carpool if you can. We anticipate large crowds this weekend.
