‘Great Assembly’ Sesshin
Co-led by Tenshin Reb Anderson and Sojun Mel Weitsman
Applications accepted through March 31
This special sesshin, in celebration of Zen Center’s 50th anniversary and open to the greater assembly (sangha), is a unique opportunity to participate in a traditional Soto Zen meditation intensive at Tassajara outside of a three-month practice period. Join Suzuki Roshi disciples and former SFZC Abbots Tenshin Reb Anderson and Sojun Mel Weitsman in the fundamental practices of the Zen ancestors: Sitting upright like the mountains, delving into the great matter of life and death, and experiencing the deep stillness that lies within each of us.
The schedule will include sitting and walking meditation, daily Dharma talks, oryoki meals, and private interviews with senior teachers. There will also be a limited number of opportunities for participants who have had formal Zen training to support the communty in doan-ryo and oryoki serving positions.
This Great Assembly Anniversary Sesshin is open by application to anyone who has completed a practice period, sesshin or 3-week intensive at one of SFZC’s three centers or affiliated sanghas. Priority will be given to Tassajara alumni and to those who have been unable to partake in a practice period at Tassajara due to other life responsibilities, but everyone who applies will be considered. (You need not be a SFZC alumnus to apply.)
Applications for the sesshin are required and will be accepted through March 31.
Sesshin participants will be expected to arrive by early afternoon on Sunday, April 29 (as the Alumni Celebration Weekend Retreat is ending) and depart after the sesshin ends on Friday morning, May 4. The closing ceremony will be held on the morning of the last day and will include the monthly Suzuki Roshi Memorial. Participants will be asked to depart their rooms by 10:00 a.m. that Friday morning. The 2012 Tassajara Summer Guest Season will open on the same morning of Friday, May 4th. Sesshin participants are welcome to join the gate opening ceremony.
