“I had been a carpenter for a while and I met an engineer…. I told him what I planned to do and he said, ‘It won’t fly, you can’t do it.’ He was very academic and he thought it just wouldn’t work.
“But I went ahead anyway…. I believed it would work. I was a youngster then and another young man and I started moving rocks around by hand. This thing was built with no power, because there’s no electricity up there. [It was built] all by hand, with hand tools.
—Arturo Richardson, from Hope Cottage History
There are lots of stories associated with Hope Cottage, a rustic retreat perched in the hills above Green Gulch Farm, stories of solitude and lives transformed. Maybe you have one, too?
In this interview Arturo (Arthur) Richardson, the son of Hope Wheelwright — for whom Hope Cottage was built and named — describes how the cottage came into being, against the odds.
Hope Cottage itself is now in need of repair. To help, you can donate directly to the Hope Cottage Fund. Or attend the benefit evening with Reb Anderson and Laurie Anderson in conversation where, no doubt, some stories will be shared.
