Alumni Celebration Retreat
Hosted by the Alumni Steering Committee, in collaboration with Tassajara Abiding Teacher Leslie James, Zen Center Central Abbot Myogen Steve Stücky, and the Tassajara students
Advance Registration Required
This gathering of San Francisco Zen Center alumni provides a rare opportunity to meet and celebrate our mutual dharma friendship, love of practice, and sustaining support of Zen Center through the last 50 years.
The four day/three night retreat is open to anyone who is not currently an SFZC resident and has completed a practice period or 3-week intensive at either Tassajara, City Center, or Green Gulch Farm, or received jukai from an SFZC-affiliated teacher.
The celebration weekend will kick-off with an opening reception on Thursday evening, April 26. Program offerings over the four days include morning and evening zazen, traditional Soto Zen services, dharma presentations, group discussions and activities, and yoga. All events will be optional, and there will be plenty of unstructured time to connect with old and new friends, hike, bathe in the hot springs, rest and simply enjoy the treasure that is Tassajara. A more detailed schedule of events will be available at a later date.
Due to limited space and the desire to accommodate as many alumni as possible, we are not at this time accepting registration for spouses/partners or children of alumni.
If space is still available after March 15, we will happily consider such requests.
Fee and Registration Information
Fees listed below include accommodations, meals, sittings, events, and use of facilities for 3 nights/4 days. We are offering a sliding scale fee to support financial accessibility, with the request that attendees contribute at the highest level they can afford, in order to support the financial well-being of Tassajara and Zen Center.
- Shared housing: $300-$500
- Private/single housing: $600-$900 (pending availability)
Fees do not include the Stage, which is an additional $55 (roundtrip) if transportation is requested to and from Jamesburg into Tassajara.
Full payment is required at the time of registration. We can accept only checks or money orders for the Alumni Retreat. (Sorry, but credit card payments cannot be accepted for this event.)
Please download and complete the attached Alumni Retreat Registration Form (PDF) and return it with your payment to:

If you have further questions regarding the retreat or application process, please email Shogen Danielson at email@example.com. No phone calls please.
Cancellations on or after April 19 will forfeit entire payment; for cancellations before April 19, the entire payment will be returned without fee.
Scholarships: Limited scholarships may be available at a later date for those unable to afford the lowest shared room fee rate. If you would like to request a scholarship, please indicate so on the registration form; also include on the back of the form your reason for requesting a scholarship. Send in your registration form with the amount you are able to afford at this time as a deposit. When and if scholarship funds become available, we will inform you and use the funds to cover the difference between the deposit you sent in and the amount remaining up to the minimum shared housing fee of $300. If scholarship funds do not become available, then we will either refund your deposit or, if you are able, you may send in the amount due.
Note: Separate registration is required for the Great Assembly Anniversary Sesshin.
